What is Tabata?
Tabata is a form of high intensity interval training built around 20 seconds of hard effort followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for eight rounds. It is named after Japanese researcher Izumi Tabata, and a full session is under four minutes.
How to use this Tabata timer
- The timer is already set to 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest and 8 rounds.
- Press Start and begin your first exercise when you hear the beep.
- Switch to rest at the next beep, and keep going until the timer says All done.
Tabata workout ideas
Pick one exercise for all eight rounds, or alternate two. Squats, press-ups, burpees, mountain climbers and skipping all work well. If you are new to high intensity exercise, start gently and check with your doctor if you are unsure.
